Day 1 – Laos Family Vacation With Elephant Riding: Start your Luang prabang  Elephant riding vacation with a Mekong river cruise (L/D)

Start for this unique adventure tour with the first amazing highlight…the Mekong river. On our cruise along the Mekong we can enjoy the landscape on this majestic river. (You may start from Pakbeng or Luang Prabang). Lunch is served on board of the traditional Mekong slow boat. In the afternoon we arrive in Tha Xuang, a small village on the Mekong . Here we get on our pick up truck and take a bumpy adventure ride to Hong Sa, the center for our Elephant adventure activities. We stay in a local guest house and visit a family who invites us for dinner. Your guide will introduce you and will talk more about the following days with the Elephants…

Day 2 – Laos Family Vacation With Elephant Riding: Learning about Elephants. The Elephant at work! (B/L/D)

In the morning around 09.00 A.M. we start to experience the Elephants at work. First we hike to a local saw mill. After about 30 min. the Mahout will greet us and introduce us to what he will do today. Than we follow little trails into the forest and can experience the daily work of the Elephants in the Lao jungle. Also you may learn the first words and commands the Mahouts use to control their Elephants. We follow the Elephant on small trails and have a picnic lunch in the forest. In the afternoon we walk back to the saw mill further on to Hong Sa. Evening in home stay or guest house and cooking interaction with your family – get to know the way of making Lao food!!

Early morning we start for our Elephant caravan tour with a visit to the market to get our supplies for the next days. Than we meet our Elephants! We load our bags on the Elephants and start our Elephant adventure… Comfortably seated in old Lao style Elephant chairs, we make our way through rice fields passing little huts, small streams and the daily Lao life in the countryside. As the vegetation becomes thicker we get further out into nature. Arriving at the Nam Tap river the Elephants can have a relaxing bath. We will stay in a small village for the night, meeting the locals and learning more about this remote region of Laos . The Elephants stay in the forest during the night. Before dinner we prepare our sleeping place in a small village home stay.

Day 4 – Laos Family Vacation With Elephant Riding: The Elephant Trail adventure experience goes on (B/L/D)

After breakfast we walk out to find the Elephants and guide them back to the village. The daily work of washing and cleaning the Elephants will be your job today. Than we load up our luggage and prepare for the next stretch on our Elephant experience adventure! Today we walk through mountainous landscape and enjoy again beautiful panorama in the tropical surrounding. We follow a valley and later down to the Mekong region passing mountain rice fields and mystical landscape sceneries. Approaching the magic Mekong we come closer to the next village! In this beautifully located village we will be welcomed for the night. Take a walk around the village and check out your family home stay… You will enjoy a dinner and a local style celebration, the Baci ceremony, to receive blessings for your onward journey.

Day 5 – Laos Family Vacation With Elephant Riding: Elephants along the Mekong travel to Luang Prabang or Pakbeng (B/L)

In the morning we have the chance to wash our Elephants in the Mekong . A wonderful and special experience if you have not done it the day before already… Than we wave our farewells to the Elephants and the villagers taking a passage on the Mekong . Lunch is taken on board for the guests going to Luang Prabang. (Luang Prabang passangers can enjoy the Pak Ou cave along the way!) If you leave for Pakbeng we serve lunch after arrival in Pakbeng. Information:
You have to be open-minded, flexible and an adventurous type of person…than you will love this Lao Elephant experience. You need to be physically fit and able to walk a few hours per day. During our Elephant caravan adventure you spend a few hours on the elephant every day on various trails. Be flexible as routes, mentioned times and accommodation may change according to local conditions also depending on the season!
On this tour we will provide all meals for you…and you can join cooking at the same time. Expect local style cuisine as well as basic overnight conditions.
Our Elephant Adventure participants should be aware that we have no western-style toilets and washing facilities available in the villages. Depending on season and weather conditions we use Camping facilities as well as family home stays…you need to share your space!
What to bring:
– A small dry bag for your camera and purse especially if it rains
– Torch and spare batteries
– Your own sleeping bag, it could be quite cold from December to February
– Clothes that dry fast
– Ecological soup
– Towel and Sarong (long skirt) used by Lao to go bathing in the river.
This is important for women especially
– Pocket knife
– Hat, long sleeves T-shirts and long trousers
– Running/hiking shoes and sandals, socks
– First-aid kit with personal equipment
– Good amount of tolerance
